The Metal2Petal initiative speaks to the tremendous richness and biological diversity of this region – from estuarine wetlands to a diversity of forest types, from vernal pools to river headwaters. The habitats that we are targeting for conservation contain a wide variety of imperiled species such as River Otters, California TIger Salamander, Peregrine Falcons, Spotted Owls, Brown Pelicans, as well as wide ranging mammals such as Mountain Lion, Elk and Black Bear. Migratory birds including Wood Duck, Ross Goose, Common Eider, Osprey, and Great Blue Heron, call these habitats their winter home.
We plan to focus on parcels that will provide invaluable linkages from existing open space to the creation of new refuges. We will also target key areas that contain the region’s highest diversity of habitat and are more likely to continue to harbor a wide range of wildlife as the climate changes.
Strategically, land trusts have used grants to generate and solidify support for projects of high ecological significance, drawing scarce public and private funds to the topmost priority transactions towards protecting habitat. Beyond the acres protected and matching funds leveraged, Metal2Petal will contribute to the awareness of and commitment to conservation of wildlife habitat. It will assist conservation organizations from local land trusts to national organizations and help states realize significant habitat protection goals.
At a time of reduced funding for conservation, the success of this initiative is a testament to the vision, commitment and tenacity of these public and nonprofit agencies. The success of Metal2Petal will inform future initiatives, using the best scientific information to refine conservation strategies and to ensure the protection of the best lands most essential to diversity. At the heart of our mission is the two-fold advantage that our program offers: we take old polluting vehicles off the road and recycle them – and the cash from that endeavor is used to purchase important plots of land that will be protected in perpituity.
